    NIFT Syllabus FAQs

NIFT B.Des selection is a three-stage process: (1) Creative Ability Test (CAT) — a subjective drawing and design test worth 50%, (2) General Ability Test (GAT) — an objective paper covering Quantitative, English, Logical Reasoning, and GK worth 30%, and (3) Situation Test — a practical material handling and 3D modeling test worth 20%. CAT and GAT are conducted on the same day.
CAT preparation requires consistent practice of freehand drawing, sketching from memory, and developing your observation skills. Focus on perspective drawing, color theory, composition, and concept development. Practice with different mediums like pencils, crayons, and pastels. Study design elements, visual logic, and try to build a strong portfolio of varied subjects — nature, human figures, objects, and abstract compositions.
In the Situation Test, you are provided with materials like clay, paper, thermocol, wires, fabric, and other craft supplies. You must create a 3D model based on a given theme. Practice with everyday materials at home — cardboard, glue, newspaper, toothpicks, fabric scraps. Focus on structural stability, creative composition, finishing, and writing a clear concept explanation for your model.
While self-study is possible, coaching provides structured guidance, peer learning, expert feedback on your CAT drawings, and regular mock tests that simulate the real exam. At The Opus Way, our NIFT program offers personalized mentorship, portfolio reviews, weekly drawing practice sessions, and comprehensive GAT study material — giving you a significant edge over self-study candidates.
For Quantitative Ability, refer to NCERT Mathematics (Class 8-10) and R.S. Aggarwal's Quantitative Aptitude. For English, use Wren & Martin for grammar and Word Power Made Easy for vocabulary. For Logical Reasoning, practice with R.S. Aggarwal's Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning. For GK, follow monthly current affairs magazines and Manorama Yearbook. The Opus Way also provides curated NIFT-specific GAT study material.
Drawing skill improvement requires daily practice. Start with basic shapes and gradually move to complex compositions. Practice gesture drawing (30-second sketches), still life, perspective drawing, and memory drawing. Study the work of designers and illustrators. Keep a sketchbook and draw from observation daily. Take feedback from experienced mentors — at The Opus Way, our faculty provides weekly one-on-one drawing reviews to help you improve rapidly.
Ideally, start preparation 12-18 months before the exam. For NIFT 2027 (expected February 2027), begin in early 2026. This gives you enough time to build drawing skills (which take the longest to develop), cover the GAT syllabus systematically, and practice for the Situation Test. Early starters also have time for multiple revision cycles and mock tests.
