    NID Syllabus FAQs

NID DAT is a two-stage exam. DAT Prelims consists of Part I: GAT (General Aptitude Test — objective MCQs, 30-40% weightage) and Part II: CAT (Creative Ability Test — subjective drawing, 60-70% weightage). Shortlisted candidates then appear for DAT Mains, which includes a Studio Test and Personal Interview. Both GAT and CAT are conducted on the same day in pen-and-paper mode.
CAT preparation requires daily practice of freehand sketching, perspective drawing, and memory drawing. Focus on one, two, and three-point perspective, light and shadow techniques, human figure proportions, and composition. Build a strong visual vocabulary by sketching from observation — nature, objects, interiors, and everyday scenes. Regular feedback from experienced mentors is crucial for rapid improvement.
The Studio Test is a hands-on evaluation where candidates work with materials like clay, paper, thermocol, wire, and fabric to create 3D models based on a given theme. It tests material handling, creative composition, spatial ability, and finishing skills. Candidates also write a brief concept explanation. Practice with everyday materials at home and focus on structural stability, aesthetics, and innovative thinking.
While self-study is possible, coaching provides structured guidance, peer learning, expert feedback on your CAT drawings, and regular mock tests that simulate the real exam. At The Opus Way, our NID program offers personalized mentorship, portfolio reviews, weekly sketching practice sessions, and comprehensive GAT study material — giving you a significant edge over self-study candidates.
For General Aptitude, practice with R.S. Aggarwal's Quantitative Aptitude and Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning. For English, use Wren & Martin for grammar and Word Power Made Easy for vocabulary. For GK, follow monthly current affairs compilations, Manorama Yearbook, and design-specific magazines. For the creative section, study NID previous year papers and practice drawing from reference books on perspective, color theory, and design principles.
Drawing skill improvement requires consistent daily practice. Start with basic shapes and gradually move to complex compositions. Practice gesture drawing (30-second sketches), still life, perspective drawing, and memory drawing. Study the work of designers and illustrators. Keep a sketchbook and draw from observation daily. Take feedback from experienced mentors — at The Opus Way, our faculty provides weekly one-on-one drawing reviews to help you improve rapidly.
Ideally, start preparation 12-18 months before the exam. For NID DAT 2027 (expected December 2026), begin in early 2026. This gives you enough time to build drawing skills (which take the longest to develop), cover the GAT syllabus systematically, and practice for the Studio Test. Early starters also have time for multiple revision cycles, mock tests, and portfolio building.
