What is NIFT?

NIFT is the ultimate destination to study fashion design, and other allied courses related to garments, in India. The National Institute of Fashion Technology, set up in 1986, was the vision of the Ministry of Textiles to provide the citizens of this country with holistic training in the field of textile and fashion design. Over the years, the NIFT’s introduced innovative programs such as the 4 years Bachelor of design (B.DES) programs in:

Fashion Design

Textile Design

Apparel Design

Products and Accessory Design

Leather Design

Jewellery Design

etc.

NIFT’s vision: To emerge as a centre of excellence and innovation, proactively catalyzing the growth of fashion business through leadership in professional education with concern for social and human values.
The NIFT’s offer state of the art curriculum taught by great faculty who are experts in their fields. The course will make you industry ready and you will get hired by the top brands in the country as well as internationally.
There are 16 NIFT’s with Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad leading the fray. The others are also good but not as good as the top 5.

The B.Des Course at NIFT is a 4 year degree with the first year as foundation and specializations start from the second year. The environment is highly competitive and one needs to be consistent with the coursework. A NIFT degree is all that you need to make it into the world of fashion design and other allied careers.

NIFT Admission

To make it into NIFT, one needs to clear 2 phases and 3 exams.
PHASE 1:
GAT (General Ability Test): This exam is of 100 marks and will test you on English / Logic / Math and GK (fashion GK and current affairs). The GAT holds 30% weighting in the entire process
CAT (Creative Ability Test): This section will test you on your observation and sketching skills. It will test you on your creative bent of mind and visualizations. Questions may ask you to design a t-shirt / poster / write a story / colour theory / doodling / illustrations etc. The CAT holds 50% weight in the entire process.
Once you clear phase 1, you will be called for the Situation Test based on your consolidated marks in the CAT and the GAT
PHASE 2:

Situation test:

Material Handling skills. 3d models to be created with some basic material based on a theme. This has 20% weightage.
Once the situation test is done, you will get an all India rank based on which you can choose your specific centre along with the score. The higher the rank the more options you have. Eg: If you’re AIR 1, you can get Delhi FD. If you’re AIR 500, You can get Kolkata / Gandhinagar, but not Delhi.
