Eligibility of NLU Law Courses 2024

Students wishing to join the student community at one of India’s national law universities will need to pass the CLAT exam for the year. There is no age limit as such to apply for the CLAT, nor is there a limit to the number of times you can apply for the CLAT exam.

The eligibility criteria for being able to appear for CLAT are different for both UG and PG admissions. Refer to the NLU list for the details.

NLU Eligibility for UG Courses: Students wishing to pursue a law degree program require you to have passed 12th. Only the Scheduled Tribes and the scheduled castes were granted the grant in terms of overall marks they would need for the selection process, i.e. 45% for the general category including OBC and people with special abilities (SAP) and 40% for SC / ST.

NLU Eligibility for PG Courses: To get admission into a postgraduate subject, the student will need to ensure they have a degree of some kind from the Bar Council of India stating that the student has completed his / her degree in LL.B. (3 or 5-year law course) or any equivalent degree course. Just like before, the SC / ST has an allowance in terms of the overall grades they would need for the postgraduate degree, namely 55% for the unreserved category and 50% for the SC / ST category.

A: There are a total of 23 NLUs in India.

Q: Are NLUs government colleges?

A: Yes, all national law universities were established by an act of the state government. Therefore, all NLUs are BCI-affiliated and UGC-recognized state law universities.

Q: What are the fees of NLU Delhi?

A: The NLU Delhi admission fee for both UG and PG law courses is close to Rs 2 lakh for one year.

Q: What is the NLU admission procedure?

A: For NLU admission to UG or PG law courses, applicants must attend national-level law entrance exams such as CLAT and AILET.

Q: What is the best NLU in India?

A: According to the 2020 NIRF ranking, NLSIU Bangalore is the best national law university in India, followed by NLU Delhi and NALSAR Hyderabad.

Q: Can I get admission into NLU without CLAT?

A: All NLUs, except NLU Delhi, accept the CLAT entrance test for Student Selection. If you seek admission to NLU Delhi, you will need to apply for AILET. For 2023 admissions, NLSIU conducted its own entrance exam called NLAT. However, it is mandatory to report to CLAT for admission into any other NLU.
