Difference Between CLAT, AILET | AILET vs CLAT

What is AILET?

AILET or the All India Law Entrance Test is the exam you need to crack to get into the prestigious National Law University Delhi, (NLU – D). What’s interesting is the fact that NLU – D is the ONLY National Law University that conducts its own admission process independently of the CLAT. NLU – D is ranked among the top 5 National Law Schools in India. It’s a great university for law for both its undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) programs.

What is CLAT?

CLAT is the foremost entrance a law aspirant needs to sit for if he / she wants to take admission into the National Law Universities of NLU’s in India. The CLAT is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities headed by NLS Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad and NLIU Bhopal. The onus of conducting the CLAT is on rotational basis and each of the 22 NLU’s is expected conduct the CLAT consecutively.

AILET vs CLAT: Eligibility

AILET:Eligibility Criteria

Qualifying Exam: Any exam recognized by the UGC as equivalent to Class 12th with a minimum of 50% in the aggregate score

Note: Candidates appearing for their Class 12th examination in 2023 are definitely eligible for AILET 2023
AILET 2021 Age Limit: There is no upper age limit to apply for AILET 2023.

CLAT:Eligibility Criteria

Qualifying Exam: Any exam recognized by the UGC as equivalent to Class 12th with a minimum of 50% in the aggregate score

Appearing candidates: Board year students are eligible to apply for CLAT 2023
Age Limit: CLAT does NOT prescribe an upper age limit

AILET vs CLAT: Difficulty Level

Number of applicants:

AILET 2023 is expected to see around 20000 candidates appearing 173 seats at NLU, Delhi
CLAT 2023 is expected to see around 80000 candidates appearing 3300 seats in the 22 NLU’s
CLAT and AILET are both standardised exams and one isn’t necessarily tougher than the other. However, since the seat – candidate ratio at AILET is higher, AILET can be considered to be a more competitive exam than the CLAT
Note: Since both these exams get you access to the premier law colleges in India, most of the serious candidates appear for both. However, the CLAT is definitely a more popular exam than the AILET

Essentially, the preparation strategies between the two exams will be different because the AILET and CLAT patterns are different with a different question mix. However, the underlying principles remain the same.

Do check out The OPUS CLAT and AILET programs that will help you ace each with ease =) All the best
